  • FWPCOA Region VIII to Host Water/Wastewater Exposition

Because municipal fund cutbacks kept many people in FWPCOA Region VIII (Collier, Lee, Charlotte, Glades, Desoto, & Hendry counties) from attending the Florida Water Resource Conference, the inaugural Region VIII Water & Wastewater Exposition has been scheduled for the Harborside Convention Center in downtown Fort Myers on September 9. Doors will open from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. The show is free to all attendees. There will be finger foods provided and many door prizes.

Courses will be offered for CEU credit in two sessions. The morning session features a choice between “Control Panels” and “Blueprints 101: The Art of Reading & Understanding Blueprints.” The afternoon session offers a choice between “Pumps & Blowers” and “Cross Connection Control: Hazard Assessment.” All classes are $65 for FWPCOA members and $90 for nonmembers. For details see the exposition advertisement in the August and September issues of the Florida Water Resources Journal.

Booth space is available for vendors that supply equipment and services to the water and wastewater industry. For exhibitor registration fees and forms, contact Region VIII Director Jeffrey Poteet at 239-389-5181. Registration deadline is August 28.

  • Technical Symposium Set on River Study

Registration is under way for the St. Johns River Water Management District’s technical symposium on the first phase of the district’s investigation of potential cumulative effects of surface water withdrawals from the St. Johns and Ocklawaha rivers.

The meeting, hosted by the University of Florida Water Institute, will be held from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sept. 17 and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. on Sept. 18 at the Hilton University of Florida Conference Center at 1714 S.W. 34th St. in Gainesville. Pre-registration is required on a first-come, first-served basis because of potential space limitations. Visit the district’s Web site at http://www.sjrwmd.com/surfacewaterwithdrawals/symposium.html for registration instructions.

The meeting is free and open to the public, although members of the public who want to participate in lunch and coffee breaks must pay $138 for two days.

The symposium will offer the technical working groups that are conducting the study an opportunity to become more fully aware of all of the interrelated aspects of the study, share technical information, and exchange ideas. The agenda will feature presentations by the lead scientists and members of seven technical working groups conducting the preliminary investigations, followed by research group discussion.

To accommodate members of the public unable to attend the meeting, the district will provide live video on the Internet of the presentations and group discussions at www.sjrwmd.com/surfacewaterwithdrawals/symposium.html. For those who do not have access to the Internet, the live video will be available at district headquarters in Palatka.

Public comment will be invited at the end of each day’s proceedings. Comment cards will be available throughout the meeting for members of the public wishing to provide written comments, or comments may be e-mailed to the district during and after the symposium. Prior to the symposium, a link to an e-mail address for submitting comments will be available on the district’s Web site.

To learn more about potential surface water withdrawals and the cumulative impact assessment, visit the district online at www.sjrwmd.com/surfacewaterwithdrawals.

  • All Aboard for Caribbean Holiday Cruise

Region 7 of the Florida Water & Pollution Control Operators Association will sponsor an eight-night holiday cruise in December to the Eastern Caribbean for members of the Florida water and wastewater industry, their families and friends.

Participants don't have to be a member of Region 7 or even a member of the FWPCOA to join the cruise. Members of the FWEA and FSAWWA are invited, along with other water/wastewater professionals in the state. Those who sign up are welcome to bring their families and friends from outside the industry.

The trip aboard Royal Caribbean Cruise Line's new Independence of the Seas will begin Saturday, December 13, from Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades and return Sunday, December 21. In addition to three full days at sea, the voyage will feature visits to four Caribbean ports: San Juan, Puerto Rico; Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas; Philipsburg, St. Maarten; and the cruise line's private desert island beach resort in Labadee, Haiti.

Basic cabin rates start at $799 per person double occupancy and are even lower in cabins that can accommodate families of three or more. There is also a special group $100-per-cabin onboard credit that can be used aboard ship or for shore excursions.

Travelers must make a deposit to hold their reservation. Deposits are fully refundable until October 6 if plans change. Travel agent Sam Guess at Peter Berlin's Travel Center in Pompano Beach can detail any government taxes and fuel surcharges that may apply.

For detailed information on the trip, visit the FWPCOA Region 7 Web site or access the Web page directly at www.members.aol.com/ExtraFileSpace. For questions about the reservation process, contact Sam Guess toll-free at 800-874-6040.

  • Web Site Focuses on Utility Regulation

An important online resource for utility policy makers is titled the Body of Knowledge on Utility Regulation at www.regulationbodyofknowledge.org. This Web site provides summaries of and links to more than 300 reference sites on utility policy, along with an 80-page glossary and self-testing features to facilitate learning. References include publications and decisions by regulatory agencies and other governmental bodies; policy advisories by think tanks, consultants, and donor agencies; and research by academics, consultants, and other experts.

Developed by the University of Florida's Public Utility Research Center in collaboration with the University of Toulouse, the Pontificia Universidad Catolica, the World Bank, and a panel of international experts, the site has been engineered to as functional on a 15-year-old computer with a dial-up connection to the Internet as it is on a new computer with a broadband connection. It is designed to be equally accessible those using Windows, Linux, or MacOS systems, viewing on a regular computer monitor or a mobile phone screen, or read aloud by screen reading software for the visually impaired.

The site is funded by the Public-Private Infrastructure Advisory Facility. Suggestions for additions to the learning system are appreciated. For details contact Sanford Berg, professor at the Public Utility Research Center, at sanford.berg@cba.ufl.edu.
